Staff told the commission the cemeteries have "a substantial amount of money and counts that go towards the maintenance," and said the transfer was not expected to be a financial burden on the city; staff also noted the possibility that some adjacent excess land could be considered for future municipal use.
Commissioners discussed scope and confirmed the referral was focused on Peace Dale (not other cemeteries). Commissioner discussion concluded the referral is generally consistent with the 2015 Plan of Conservation and Development, and the commission voted to send the referral to City Council.
The motion carried by voice vote at the planning commission; the item now advances to the City Council, where the council and relevant financial bodies will review the transfer terms and any financial details associated with maintenance endowments.
