Commission backs planning for women veterans monument, tentatively near memorial row

The Parks Commission voted Tuesday to support planning for a monument recognizing Bristol women who served in the military, a project museum and veterans‑council members described as "long overdue."

Carol (who asked to be called "Mickey"), speaking for the Bristol Military Museum, summarized a multi‑year research effort to identify women veterans from Bristol and gather artifacts and family histories. "This is an exciting time for us because we all here are making history because this is something that has never been done," she said, explaining that museum volunteers began detailed research in 2023 to document local women who served.

Rick Carrell, chairman of the Bristol Veterans Council, told commissioners the council endorses the concept and has a tentative site in mind: the northern side of the memorial row where the gazebo stands. The proponents said the gazebo could be removed if needed and that the location benefits from existing walkway access and power. Carrell said initial planning anticipates design work involving local schools and a two‑year schedule from design to dedication.

Commissioners voted to support the concept so the proponents can proceed with committee formation, design solicitations and fundraising; formal design and site approvals will return to the board for final sign‑off. The parks staff will coordinate with the veterans council and museum on permitting, site preparation and a fundraising timeline.

The board recorded the motion as concept approval; no final design or construction contract was authorized at this meeting.
