Auburndale approves extension of Polk County dispatch contract through Sept. 30, 2027

The City of Auburndale Commission voted unanimously May 4 to approve an Interlocal Agreement extending police and fire/rescue dispatch services provided by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office through Sept. 30, 2027. City Manager Jeffrey Brown introduced the item and recommended approval.
The agreement continues a practice of outsourcing police dispatching since 2008 and fire/rescue dispatching since 2010. Brown told the commission the sheriff’s office in 2025 began offering one-year contracts to better align with market conditions; the proposed extension would run to Sept. 30, 2027. The proposed Fiscal Year 2027 budget includes $343,195 for police-related dispatching, an increase of 4 percent, and $46,272 for fire/rescue dispatching, an increase of 5 percent, with charges based on call volumes.
Staff said the Interlocal Agreement was prepared by the Polk County Office of Legal Affairs and reviewed by the city’s Police Chief, Fire Chief, City Manager and City Attorney. No members of the public spoke on the item during the meeting.
Commissioner Sean Levy moved to approve the Interlocal Agreement; Commissioner Crystal Tijerina seconded. The commission recorded all ayes and the motion passed.
The agreement does not change the city’s internal staffing but formalizes continuing dispatch services and the FY2027 budget allocation. The City Manager is authorized to execute the contract on behalf of the City.
