Parent urges Maury County schools to make Jay Woodard playground ADA-accessible

A Maury County parent told the school board May 5 that the larger playground at Jay Woodard is not accessible for her 7-year-old daughter, who uses a wheelchair due to spina bifida, and asked the district to make the area accessible from the sidewalk.

The parent said attempts to get information since September produced only a brief response and no follow-up. She described surfacing problems, saying mulch and uneven grass prevent wheelchair access: "If you've ever had to push yourself in a wheelchair... mulch is not." She told the board her daughter has three more years at the school and that other students who use mobility devices would also be affected if access is not fixed.

Board response Chair Mr. Perry and Director Ventura said they would check with the superintendent and staff and follow up with the parent. The chair thanked the parent for bringing the issue forward and noted the district would discuss the matter and relay next steps.

What to expect The board did not take formal action at the meeting but acknowledged the concern and directed staff to investigate and report back to the parent and board. The parent noted the Miracle League and other local projects provide some accessible options nearby but said her daughter needs access at her school.
