Students, teachers and VFW honored at Hawkins County school board meeting

Carl Clark, commander of VFW Post 9543, introduced the VFW's CTE scholarship and praised the scholarship recipient. Mike Manning, the VFW service officer introduced by a board member, described the VFW's motivation to support vocational and technical education in Hawkins County.
Philip Jennings, Tennessee TSA advisor, described his students' state placings and national qualifiers — including Andrew Jarnigan (game-design project), Ponsari Patel (promotional design and onsite event wins), Tim Quillin and Carson Whitmire (coding) and a virtual-reality museum project by Sawyer Jenkins and Jacob Lockhart — and told the board he was proud of their work: “They've all made the choice now to continue their education…they're the reason I do this.”
Staff also reported that Volunteer High School and Cherokee High School competed in a county nursing program skills competition and noted counts of students who have passed or will sit for CNA certification testing in upcoming terms. The board read a list of retirees and invited them forward for recognition and photographs.
The recognitions were ceremonial and no formal votes were attached; they provided time for community groups and school staff to highlight student success and staff service.
