Commission debates moving annual meeting and readies for possible special hearing on data center project

During communications and agenda planning, the Chair proposed rescheduling the Planning Commission's annual meeting from June to later in the summer (August or September) because interviews and new appointments are expected to shift the membership.
Staff said Blanchet and council liaisons are coordinating interviews (more than 30 applicants reported) and that the chair can reschedule the annual meeting without a formal vote although an announcement could be made at the next business meeting. Members discussed appointing an interim or earlier vice chair so meetings can proceed if the chair must step away.
Separately, staff warned one item is on a fast track — a data center development plan — that could draw large public interest and require a special meeting with a larger venue and additional staff coordination. Staff said the item was tentatively targeted for late June but could push into early July depending on council schedules. Commissioners were asked to be patient while staff works on timing and notifications.
Staff also noted other planning efforts (stakeholder meetings on COS topics and the Southeast Strong plan) would be presented to the commission in July.
