Council closes out CDBG grants for Kelly Children’s Home; founder says facility can house 16 young adults

Washington, North Carolina — At a public hearing March 9, the Washington City Council closed out two Community Development Block Grant Neighborhood Revitalization awards (Grants 17‑D‑3143 & 19‑C‑3143) that funded renovation of 300 East 10th Street for the Kelly Children’s Home, now called the Kelly Center of Hope.
Domini Cunningham, Interim Community & Cultural Services Director, told the Council the city received $750,000 (19‑C‑3143) on March 10, 2021 and $470,140 (17‑D‑3143) on June 10, 2024 for total project funding of $1,220,140; the project was funded 100% with CDBG funds. Alexis Kelly, president and co‑founder of Kelly Children’s Home, thanked City staff, the Department of Commerce, Donald Sadler, Jonathan Russell and council members and stated the agency can house up to 16 young adults and is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Council closed out the grants by motion.
