Okaloosa board praises sheriff's office, honors school resource officers

The Okaloosa County School Board opened its March 9 workshop by recognizing the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office and the district's school resource officers for their partnership in school safety.
Superintendent Chambers thanked the sheriff's office and SROs, saying, "One of the most pivotal layers of safety is that of our school resource officers and the work that they do every single day." Board members echoed that sentiment during the recognitions.
Sheriff Aden, who spoke about his experience as an early SRO, said the program began in the late 1990s and has grown into a daily partnership with schools. "It was new ... pre Columbine ... '97, '98," he said, recalling early challenges and community reaction to officers in schools. He described SROs as both a security and mentorship presence, adding that the program has helped the district respond to threats (including swatting calls) and served as a positive point of contact between students and law enforcement.
Board members and the superintendent framed SROs as part of a broader set of safety "layers" and as contributors to school-community relations: "They're a part of the family of that school," one board member said.
No formal action was taken; the recognition was ceremonial and was followed by the meeting's regular agenda.
