Riverview students, athletes and Emerging Leaders recognized at March board meeting

The Riverview Board of Education used part of its March 24 meeting to spotlight student achievements and district activities. Athletic Director Derrick DiBrano and coaches recognized winter-sport accomplishments, and Emerging Leaders students described recent service projects.
Coach Ryan Pickell highlighted a strong multi-year run for the boys swimming program, noting three SMISL and three Downriver Classic championships for seniors and multiple top-10 state finishes over recent seasons. Girls swimmer Amelia Czata was recognized as a state qualifier and an SMISL champion in the 200-yard medley and the 200-yard medley relay; Coach Pickell and assistant coach Renee Daniel were listed with the swim recognitions. Bowling coach Bill Patterson noted that Ryan Cox qualified for the state tournament after finishing second in the league and 20th at state.
Principal Jennifer Furkas and sponsor Erika Bailey introduced members of the Emerging Leaders/Student Council, who summarized projects including a fundraiser tied to a basketball event, a costume drive, volunteering at a children's hospital craft night, running the Maroon Monsoon Network and organizing a Friendsgiving with local restaurants.
Student liaison Kosta Matthews reported schoolwide activities: Pirates of the Month recognitions for RESPECT, DECA state competitors advancing toward nationals, the RCHS drama production Into the Woods, band and choir festival participation, and planned student trips to Europe. Superintendent JJ Hatzl used administrative remarks to thank volunteers, note that elementary tutoring ends this week, and remind families that Schools of Choice and kindergarten/preschool registration open in April; testing days in April and appointment-only trimester conferences on April 16 were also noted.
Trustee Meeks praised the drama production and the Hall of Fame banquet, and President Bohr thanked staff members involved with literacy efforts and called out coordinators Mrs. Plackowski and Mrs. Campau for ECLC Literacy Night. The meeting adjourned at 7:43 p.m. and the board listed a study session for April 20 and its next regular meeting for April 21.
