Smyth County BZA elects 2010 officers, removes three-term officer limit

At its Jan. 5, 2010 meeting the Smyth County Board of Zoning Appeals unanimously elected John Saunders chair, Robert Odum vice chair and Mike May secretary for 2010, removed a three-consecutive-term restriction for officer posts, approved the 2008–2009 annual report and set the 2010 meeting calendar.
The Smyth County Board of Zoning Appeals elected John Saunders chairman, Robert Odum vice chairman and Mike May secretary for calendar year 2010 at a meeting on Jan. 5, 2010, at the Smyth County Office Building. The organizational slate was elected by unanimous vote after the board temporarily suspended its bylaws to complete officer appointments.
The board also approved a procedural change to its Operating Procedures, removing the phrase "not to exceed three consecutive terms" for the offices of chairman, vice chairman and secretary. The change was implemented during the organizational portion of the meeting and was adopted by the board as part of its annual review of rules.
Board members unanimously approved the minutes of Oct. 6, 2009, and set the 2010 meeting calendar to meet at 6:00 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month, with additional meetings scheduled as needed around holidays or room availability. The board accepted its 2008–2009 Annual Report; the report will be forwarded to the Board of Supervisors.
Clegg Williams, a county staff member, told the board that training opportunities remain available but have been reduced locally due to budget cuts and asked members to contact staff if they wish to pursue training.
Chairman Saunders adjourned the meeting at approximately 6:30 p.m.
