The Colorado County Commissioners Court voted Nov. 10 to extend the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Lavaca County that enables the counties to share an EMS director. The extension keeps the March 1, 2023 MOU in effect until either county gives at least 30 days’ termination notice.
Judge Ty Prause moved to approve the extension; Commissioner Darrell Gertson seconded. The court recorded a unanimous 5-0 vote.
The minutes include the MOU text. Key provisions listed in the packet and read into the record include: Lavaca County will share duties of its EMS Director and pay one-half of the salary ($50,000) and associated benefits; Colorado County will hire the current Lavaca County EMS Director, provide a vehicle for response in both counties and share fuel and maintenance costs. Both counties' commissioners courts will receive monthly reports from the EMS director.
Why it matters: Interlocal agreements like this allow rural counties to share scarce professional staff and spread personnel costs. The MOU explicitly preserves each county’s ability to terminate the arrangement with 30 days’ notice.
