Kalamazoo approves Northside social district to expand business event options

The Kalamazoo City Commission voted May 18 to create a social district inside the Northside Cultural Business District, a bounded area where patrons can carry labeled beverage containers between participating establishments and public spaces within the district.
Kevin Ford of the Northside Cultural Business District Authority described the proposal as similar to the downtown social district and said the tool is intended to help bars and restaurants expand footprint and draw customers. "This is it's exactly like the downtown social district. No difference," Ford said.
City staff and Director Antonio Mitchell explained regulatory details: the district uses state-regulated cups/stickers, local policy controls whether city-owned parks within the boundary (for example, Harrison Park) can host events that allow the social-district cup, and the district does not merge with the downtown social district — cups and access do not transfer between districts.
Business owners and residents spoke in favor, saying the district could increase foot traffic and help existing businesses. Commissioner Slaby and others emphasized the need for public education so residents understand how the district works.
The commission adopted the resolution creating the Northside social district by roll-call vote; the approval authorizes staff to implement the district consistent with state law and local policy. The item passed after public comment and commissioner discussion about boundaries, enforcement and potential incremental marketing to explain the program to residents and businesses.
