The Historic District Commission of the City of the Village of Clarkston approved a Certificate of Appropriateness (CoA) on May 12, 2026 to allow homeowner Katie LaLone to remove and replace the existing roof at 24 South Holcomb Road after she reported progressively increased water leakage this season. The commission met at Art Pappas Village Hall and was convened by Chair J. Radcliff at 7:01 P.M.
Commissioners said they applied the Secretary of the Interior Standards for Rehabilitation (Standards 2, 9 and 10) in reviewing the request. The CoA approved removal and replacement of portions of damaged decking as needed; installation of six feet of ice shield; synthetic underlayment; CertainTeed Landmark Pro Moire Black shingles; and a new continuous ridge vent. The motion to grant the CoA was made by K. Trumbore and seconded by J. Radcliff and passed in a roll-call vote with Michael Moon, J. Radcliff and K. Trumbore recorded as voting aye.
At the start of the meeting, the commission approved the agenda on a motion by K. Trumbore, seconded by Michael Moon, with that motion carried unanimously. Action on approval of the April 14 meeting minutes was postponed to the June 2026 meeting.
In final comments, Michael and Nancy Moon summarized impressions from the 46th MHPN Annual Statewide Historic Preservation Conference (May 7–9) and reported speaking with two local companies (based in Detroit and Southfield) that specialize in restoring — rather than replacing — historic windows and doors; a third New York firm that does large commercial or institutional restoration was also noted. The minutes state that business-card information will be made available to homeowners. Commissioners also noted that Certificates of Appropriateness granted in May 2025 for 20–26 South Main Street to Sarah Schneider are approaching the end of their one-year validity period and that she will be contacted for an update.
The meeting adjourned at 8:09 P.M. The commission’s next regularly scheduled meeting is Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at 7:00 P.M.
