DeWitt County moves on local road safety: speed limits, No Thru Truck signs and a road abandonment

On Feb. 9 the court held a public hearing on proposed No Thru Truck Traffic signs in Westhoff at US 87 North & Carter Avenue and Railroad Street & Carter Avenue (Precinct 1). Commissioner Ryan Varela moved to place the signs and Commissioner Brian Carson seconded; the motion passed 5-0.
The court had previously scheduled, and on Feb. 23 closed, a public hearing on installing 35 mph speed limit signs on Mueller Lang Road in Precinct 4. Commissioner Brian Carson moved to install 35 mph speed limit signs along the entire length of Mueller Lang Road, effective when the signs are posted; the motion carried 5-0.
Separately, on Feb. 9 the court approved Court Order No. 2026-009 to abandon a portion of Stanchos Road; Commissioner James Kaiser made the motion and Commissioner James B. Pilchiek Jr. seconded, with a 5-0 vote.
Commissioner James Kaiser also moved to set June 22, 2026 as the timeline date for the 2026 Commissioners Annual Road Report. The court discussed plans to remove two cattle guards on Mueller Lang Road as part of the precinct's maintenance activities.
These items were presented as routine road operations and safety measures; the minutes show no public opposition at the hearings and unanimous votes by the commissioners. Implementation will follow county procedures for sign installation, notice to affected motorists, and changes to county road inventories where abandonment has been ordered.
