South Bend council proclaims May as ALS Awareness Month

Vice President Sheila Nesgotsky read a special resolution asking the city to recognize May 2026 as ALS Awareness Month and to honor those living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and their caregivers. The resolution summarized national statistics and the need for research and supportive equipment for people living with the disease.
Sandra Riegel, the family member who brought the request to council, thanked members for supporting the resolution and said the recognition helps raise awareness and encourage participation in clinical trials. "Recognition such as these are essential for building awareness," Nesgotsky said during the reading.
Council members responded with personal remarks of support and gratitude; Councilmember McBride stated she supported the resolution and thanked Sandra for attending. Clerk roll call showed the measure passed unanimously with nine ayes.
The council adopted the resolution immediately; President Lee closed the public-comment portion and members posed for a photo with the guest.
