Several residents spoke during the visitor acknowledgment period to oppose a proposed rezoning tied to a concept plan that showed a Trader Joe’s and fast-food establishments at the northeast corner of 52nd and Wilson.
Pam McGlenathan said neighbors received a mailing that resembled an advertisement; the mailing invited residents to a meeting run by a realtor representing a group of homeowners seeking to rezone the property to commercial. “None of these businesses had shown any commitment to the project,” McGlenathan said, and she called the mailer and a large sign advertising a “Trader Joe’s for Southwest Wyoming” red flags for misleading outreach. She told council the neighborhood already has several major grocery chains and new commercial development is increasing traffic near a problematic intersection.
Kenneth Howell, who lives at Water Walk Drive, said he attended the realtor-hosted meeting and found it confusing and at times misleading. He said he had requested a traffic review from public works because of concerns for people with disabilities crossing 52nd Street near a school crosswalk that has flashing lights but no reduced speed limit nearby.
Planning staff said the rezoning item was originally scheduled for the planning commission the next day but that meeting was canceled due to a quorum issue; the item has been rescheduled for June 11 at 7 p.m. Staff and council encouraged residents to attend the planning commission meeting to make their views known.
