Staff details North House HVAC project and short-term classroom cooling steps after parent complaint

Staff told the Facilities, Finance and Operations Committee on May 15 that short-term portable cooling units acquired during COVID will be installed in classrooms that lack central heating and cooling, while the district advances a larger North House HVAC replacement project.
The Chair opened the meeting and asked staff for an update on facilities. A staff member said routine maintenance continues but that temperature fluctuations left some classrooms ‘‘a little bit warm,’’ and that portable units ‘‘help…to moderate the temperature’’ in spaces without central systems. The staff member said the district expects the portable units to be installed over the next two weeks and that larger HVAC work for North House is planned for next summer.
A committee member said a parent had emailed about Hess/North House classroom heat and questioned whether existing portable units were effective or too noisy; the staff member said they had not yet reviewed that email but would follow up directly with the parent. The committee discussed short-term investments that might ease conditions for the next two hot seasons while a longer-term HVAC replacement proceeds.
On the larger project, staff said educational specifications prepared in coordination with Colliers are required by the Office of Grants Management as part of a state grant and will be circulated for board review; staff told the committee the town meeting for grant approval is expected in late June or early July and that the district has built schedule contingency so next-summer construction should not be affected.
Committee members asked that staff include a brief rationale when presenting the ed specs to the full board—explaining why the chosen system was selected (energy efficiency, building architecture, or other factors)—so the public and board understand the decision. The staff member agreed to provide that conceptual overview at the full-board presentation.
The committee did not take a formal vote on the project during this meeting; staff said the ed specs will return to the full board for approval at a future meeting.
