The House Finance Committee took up Senate Bill 21, the Alaska Work and Save bill, on May 17 in Juneau. Sponsor Bill Wilkowsky gave a brief recap: SB 21 would establish an automatic IRA (auto‑IRA) program for qualifying Alaska employees, intended to help small businesses offer retirement benefits and increase retirement access for workers of small employers. He noted at least 17 other states have enacted similar programs.
Committee members asked no substantive follow‑up questions during the recap and there were no amendments. Representative Bynum moved the bill out of committee with individual recommendations and attached fiscal notes; there were no objections and Legislative Legal was authorized to make technical and conforming changes.
Committee materials show the bill’s purpose is to provide an option for employers to offer retirement savings to employees who might otherwise lack access; the committee asked for members to sign the committee reports and scheduled further business later in the day.
