Crawford County commissioners approve consent agenda, hold executive sessions on personnel and zoning

The Crawford County Board of Commissioners met May 12, 2026, in the commissioners’ board room at the Crawford County Courthouse in Girard and approved the consent agenda on a 3-0 vote.

Commissioner Tom Moody moved to approve the consent agenda and Commissioner Carl Wood seconded; the motion passed with Commissioners Moody, Wood and Bruce Blair voting in favor. County Clerk Lisa Lusker presented the minutes and motions for the board’s signatures.

The meeting included several procedural motions to recess into closed executive sessions. Motion 26-228 authorized a 20-minute executive session to discuss EMS personnel under K.S.A. 75-4319(b)(1); Motion 26-229 authorized a 30-minute executive session for legal advice on zoning under K.S.A. 75-4319(b)(2). Later in the meeting the board recessed under Motion 26-232 for 15 minutes to discuss Health Department non-elected personnel and under Motion 26-233 for 15 minutes to discuss Road and Bridge non-elected personnel. The minutes record those executive-session motions as passing unanimously; the board reconvened each time with no formal action taken on personnel matters.

Commissioner Carl Wood told the board he is preparing materials for the 2027 budget and asked County Clerk Lisa Lusker about the budget form. Lusker said the 2027 budget form had not been released but that she was transferring data from the 2026 form and that department submissions were due May 15, 2026. The board scheduled two upcoming work sessions: May 15 at 8:30 a.m. to sign midmonth bills and payroll vouchers, and May 19 at 9:00 a.m. to discuss budgets.

On public-safety and maintenance matters, Commissioner Bruce Blair said he spoke with Mr. Matt Sanders about trash along K-69 and thanked volunteers who helped with roadside cleanup, noting some volunteers appeared to be from Adopt a Highway and student groups from Pittsburg State University. Commissioner Tom Moody reported following a truck with an unsecured load and said he contacted the sheriff; Commissioner Carl Wood said he advised a caller that hauled loads must be strapped down. The minutes do not record further enforcement action.

Under old business, Commissioner Wood said he would contact County Grant Writer Gus Brunetti to attend an upcoming meeting to provide a grant update and that other department heads would be invited to give updates, with scheduling coordinated by Lusker.

The meeting adjourned at 11:33 a.m. on a motion by Commissioner Tom Moody, seconded by Commissioner Carl Wood, with all three commissioners voting in favor. The minutes record no additional formal votes on policy items during the session.
