Tuscarawas County commissioners approve monument restoration, courthouse lighting schedule and routine business

The Tuscarawas County Board of Commissioners on May 13 approved a slate of routine and community items, including a restoration contract for a Civil War monument, a year‑round courthouse lighting schedule, a donation to the sheriff’s office and several administrative approvals.
The commissioners approved a $23,290 quote from Coon Restoration & Sealants, Inc. to clean and restore the Kaldenbaugh Civil War Monument as part of courtyard revitalization efforts and America 250 commemorations. They also adopted a courthouse exterior lighting schedule that sets colors and date ranges for observances including Memorial Day, Independence Day/America 250, Breast Cancer Awareness and Veterans Operation Green Light.
Separately, the board accepted a donated Dell Latitude 9450 laptop for the Sheriff’s Office from Martin Marcoguiseppe II and approved Job & Family Services monthly contracts as recommended by Director Veronica Spidell. Commissioners voted to approve payment of listed bills and approved a one‑year amendment to a technical assistance agreement with the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition to extend services for another year.
During discussion, Sanitary Engineer Michael Jones requested establishment of an internal fleet lease‑purchase program to allow the water and sewer district to buy equipment from the county and repay the county. Commissioners tabled that proposal pending further review and clarification.
Several procedural approvals were recorded on the agenda — routine travel authorizations, a supplemental appropriation of $34,500 to the Water & Sewer account to cover the Roswell Project, and declaration of obsolete EMA equipment — all passed with the two sitting commissioners voting yes; Commissioner Kristin Zemis was recorded absent on votes.
The meeting also included proclamations recognizing the 'Parents Who Host Lose the Most' campaign presented by Sierra Schweitzer of OhioGuideStone and Youth 2 Youth and a proclamation declaring Foster Parent Appreciation Month; both proclamations were approved and the board recessed briefly for photos.
