Riverview fifth-graders demonstrate 'thinking classroom' and growth mindset to board

Riverview School fifth-graders demonstrated the district’s “thinking classroom” approach for the Denville Township Board of Education, showing how group problem-solving and verbalizing strategies build a growth mindset.
“My name is Hudson Cote, and today we are going to be demonstrating how we show a growth mindset,” student Hudson Cote said, explaining that when work is hard “our brain has a chance to grow stronger” and that students should say “I can’t do this yet” instead of “I can’t.” Another student speaker told the board that the class solves problems on vertical whiteboards, shares thinking aloud and values mistakes as part of learning.
A presenting teacher told board members the approach keeps students engaged, improves problem-solving and math fact fluency by situating skills in real problems rather than drills. The teacher said the thinking classroom is used through grade 8 and credited a district learning lab and faculty adoption for bringing the method to life.
After the demonstration the board applauded the students and staff; the presenters posed for a group photo that the board captured as a memento of the evening’s visit.
