Board weighs adding environmental sustainability award to ‘Yard of the Month’ program

Parks and Beautification Manager Abraham Luna updated the Fort Myers Environmental Advisory Board on the quarter-based Beautification Awards at its April 7 meeting and members discussed creating a separate environmental sustainability recognition.
Luna said the Beautification Awards process is primarily visual, with Beautification Advisory Board members conducting site visits and selecting recipients; the criteria are available on the City website. Vice Chair Geraldine Reaves proposed creating a separate sustainability award because existing Beautification criteria may not align with environmental goals; she offered to prepare a summary with recommendations and reference models for the next meeting.
Board Member Sharon Schulman said publicity for past recipients has been limited and suggested inviting the Public Information Officer to share website-usage data and outreach strategies. Abraham Luna said current publicity is limited to social media and temporary signage at winning properties. Board Member Craig Edwards suggested promoting awards during Earth Day and encouraging nominations through the City website.
The board did not take final action but tasked Vice Chair Reaves with producing recommended criteria and asked staff to coordinate a PIO briefing at a future meeting.
