Village staff updated the committee on ongoing Bear Park repairs after last fall’s vehicle damage and spring storms. The village board approved replacing the tennis-court surface with Sport Court material, which staff said carries a 15-year warranty and was selected for reduced long-term maintenance. "This has a 15 year warranty," the village administrator explained during the presentation.
Insurance has covered the tennis-court surface replacement and some fence repairs; staff said insurance will pay for one light-pole replacement but lead times for a new pole are six to eight weeks. Committee members raised concerns about several wooden poles installed in the 1970s that are rotting and noted multiple fixtures will likely require replacement to avoid repeated failures. Staff outlined options including filing additional insurance claims for multiple pole replacements, ordering extra poles to reduce lead-time risk and, for the short term, renting temporary lighting (including balloon lights or rentals used by local high schools) so scheduled evening softball games can proceed.
Members also discussed whether new pole placements could be positioned to serve multiple fields (tennis court and baseball) and whether converting fixtures to LED would be worthwhile for long-term energy and maintenance savings. Staff said they are obtaining quotes and looking for vendor options; one committee member offered to check on a spare pole available through a local farm as a short-term measure.
What happens next: staff will pursue quotes for replacement poles and temporary rental lighting, confirm lead times with the vendor (Musco was mentioned for larger-diamond work) and, if appropriate, consider filing additional insurance claims to cover multiple replacements.
