Environmental board finalizes pervious-surface draft, plans Planning Board referral

The Fort Myers Environmental Advisory Board agreed April 7 that a finalized draft of revisions to the city's pervious surface materials ordinance is ready for the next step and discussed who should present it to the Planning Board.
Environmental Compliance Manager Justin Mahon said the board’s prior feedback had been incorporated into a final draft and asked whether a board member — possibly the absent Board Member Connie Bennett-Martin — could present the changes to the Planning Board. Chair David Hempleman requested the final draft be circulated to board members before it is forwarded.
Mahon said the intent of the revision is to enable sustainable practices by clarifying options in the code and to help communicate environmental benefits such as stormwater credits. Board Member Sharon Schulman noted that publicity and recognition could help businesses adopt sustainable options and that additional incentives might be needed to drive participation. Mahon added that helpful guidance is sometimes provided in pre-construction meetings even though the permitting process does not formally include an environmental review by the City.
No formal vote on an ordinance was taken; the board directed staff to share the final draft with members and to arrange for a board representative to present the item to the Planning Board.
