District outlines plan to pilot integrated elementary social studies, summer-school sites and enrollment snapshot

Dr. Teresa Vemmer, director for curriculum, instruction and assessment for Aurora East USD 131, told the curriculum committee the district plans to pilot an integrated elementary social studies model that embeds social-studies instruction into language-arts modules. "We will plan curated units as a curriculum council and district department during quarter 1 of next year," Vemmer said, adding the units would be piloted in quarter 2 with feedback collected and formal recommendations presented to the board in 2027.
Vemmer said the district intends to use existing instructional resources—HMH (the district core literacy resource), Into Reading, Arriba La Lectura, Britannica, Newsela, PebbleGo, ProQuest and Learning A–Z—to support units that integrate inquiry-based social studies with literacy skills. She said the model aims to maximize limited instructional minutes and reduce transitions while supporting reading and writing standards.
On summer programming, Vemmer outlined site-specific student counts and changes to prior programming. Preschool summer school will be at Gonzales (approximately 75 students); Dietrich will host 178 students; Hermes will host nearly 300 elementary students including general-education and ESY programs. Middle-school summer programming will be at CalHert (about 946 sixth–eighth graders plus 16 ESY students). High school summer programming will include about 600 students, with in-person algebra recovery piloted alongside typical credit-recovery offerings. Vemmer clarified that the Boys & Girls Club-run program at Allen is separate from district-run summer-sports or STEM camps.
District staff reported the most-recent enrollment and attendance snapshot: 11,693 students enrolled as of May 8 and system attendance at 89.06%. Family registration rates were cited at roughly 88% overall, with 96% of preschool and elementary families registered and 80.4% at secondary levels; the district continues targeted registration outreach.
Committee members asked clarifying questions about language allocation for bilingual instruction and logistics for summer partnerships; staff said language-allocation details for the pilot are still being determined and that the pilot would not be a simple translation between languages but would explore embedding social studies into the primary language block.
The committee took no immediate formal action; staff said the recommended Mercuri Consulting extension (to support dual-language coaching) will be brought to the board for action on June 1.
