Trails projects, museum visitors and seasonal hires highlighted at Emery County tourism meeting

Volunteer recognition and trails work
The board recognized Les for long-standing volunteer service to the county trails program; staff said Les chaired the trails committee and helped start the trails crew. The trails committee reported recent accomplishments including a new parking lot on Cole Hall Road, restoration projects such as George’s Draw and Whiskey Wash, and coordination with the BLM and county road crews to improve trail access. Committee members described a new QR-based reporting tool to capture locations and photos for trail issues.
Trails grant allocations
The board’s trails subcommittee recommended dividing the $30,000 trails grant equally among three projects—Swell Retreat, Emery City and Orangeville—awarding $10,000 to each with the option to reallocate funds if a grantee cannot proceed. The board approved the committee’s recommendation after the applicant disclosure was noted.
Museum and events
The museum representative reported a busy April with 11,912 visitors and higher revenue compared with the prior year, substantial school-tour engagement and several upcoming summer programs and exhibits. Staff said roughly 32% of visitors were from Utah and the museum recorded international visitors from Canada, Great Britain, France, Germany and the Netherlands.
Grants and seasonal hires
Staff reported receiving an OHV grant to hire summer seasonals; two hires have accepted offers and cleared background checks and will begin work at the end of the month. The bureau was also selected for an RTP grant to purchase a side-by-side vehicle; final federal approvals are pending and a contract is expected around July 1.
What happens next
Staff will disburse trail grants per the approved allocation, bring any needed reallocations back to the board, onboard seasonal hires and return with draft MOU language and additional Placer AI reports at future meetings.
