Township proclaims Arbor Day and reports progress on Peace Park and community tree plantings

DeKalb Township trustees opened the April 21 meeting with an Arbor Day proclamation and later heard project updates on Peace Park and a community tree-planting event.
During the proclamation reading, the supervisor urged citizens to celebrate Arbor Day and to support efforts to protect trees and woodlands. The board also recapped a coordinated community tree-planting at Elder Care Services where about 40 volunteers planted 16 large trees and received instruction on proper planting techniques.
Supervisor and staff also presented photos and a construction update on Peace Park. Presenters described completed excavation and gravel work for planned sidewalks, preparation of a handicap parking area, drainage work to address a swale near an adjacent apartment garage, privacy plantings and a planned pollinator garden. The project team said they expect landscaping to be finished in May and the central column/structure to be installed in the fall, weather permitting.
Trustees asked questions about site proximity to property lines, maintenance of the drainage, and tree species for pollinator habitat. The supervisor said residents who did not receive a tree in the spring round will be placed on a fall wait list as the township aims to distribute 250 total trees in celebration of the initiative.
