Board reviews upgrades for Wilson life-skills classrooms, restroom to improve accessibility

The Moline-Coal Valley CUSD 40 Board of Education on April 27 heard a detailed update on planned upgrades to life-skills (LFI) classrooms and an adjacent restroom at Wilson School. Vince, introduced at the meeting to brief the board, said the district determined the new LFI spaces need design changes to better serve students and staff.
"So with the new LFI classrooms that we have over at Wilson, it was brought to our attention that we kind of needed to update that space," Vince said, describing work the district completed with the building principal and a committee to develop a design for the classrooms. He told trustees the changes arose from site-specific needs identified by staff and families.
Erin, a member of the planning committee, said the review began after a parent raised concerns about life-skills programming and about moving some fifth graders to middle school without appropriate, developmentally suitable places to play. "A parent who was concerned about some of our life skills programming brought it to our attention... developmentally, students in our life skills program still play," Erin said. "But at the middle school level, having a safe place to play... we did not have at the middle school level." She said the committee proposed changes tailored to students' needs across pre-K through grade 12.
The committee also identified a restroom modification at Wilson to increase accessibility and privacy, including a larger changing table and improved elbow room to protect student dignity and reduce staff injury risk during lifts. District staff said the recommended improvements are tied to the consent agenda and will be brought to the board for formal approval at the May 11 meeting at Wilson.
Board members praised the district's action-tracker and monthly reporting, noting that the committee process and clear, quantitative updates made it easier to follow progress. The district said it will share the full committee recommendations and design materials with trustees prior to the May meeting.
The update was presented during the consent-agenda preview portion of the April 27 meeting; no formal vote on the Wilson renovations occurred that night. The board is scheduled to consider related consent-agenda items at its May 11 meeting.
