Parks commission hears April activity report as staff warns summer concert series may be cut

The Glendale Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission on May 18 received an April activity report that highlighted high participation in youth and senior programs and a warning from staff that the city-run summer concert series could be cut as part of budget reductions.
Sabal Garabedian, community services manager, told the commission the department ran two Parents Night Out events (20 and 15 participants), recorded 551 visitors to the Stormburn Nature Center and 60 students in its educational programs, and logged 4,400 meals served through the elderly nutrition program in April, including 2,388 delivered meals. Garabedian also described regular youth programming — Edison after-school clubs, seasonal camps and teen-night workshops — and said the department’s mentoring and employment outreach continued in local high schools.
"Based on city council's direction, we would be able to know what we are gonna be doing with summer concerts in the coming future," Garabedian said, adding that the department had proposed cutting the city-run summer concert series as one of several budget-reduction options because the Library Arts and Culture Department provides a branded music series in the city.
The discussion came as staff listed upcoming events, including a May 22 Parents Night Out, May 23 "Wonder the Wilderness" departure from Pacific Park, and campfire and nature-journaling programs in June. Garabedian thanked local partners, including the Glendale Association of Realtors, which regularly supports meal provision and seasonal assistance for youth programs.
Commissioners pressed staff for details about the scope of cuts and whether programs would be scaled or eliminated; Garabedian said final decisions would be made by the City Council during the budget process. The commission did not take formal action on programming or the concert series at the meeting.
The commission will be advised of any finalized program cancellations after the council’s budget direction is issued.
