Stephenson County board approves agenda, minutes and plan; department reports hiring progress and an HVAC repair covered by contractor

The Stephenson County board opened with a prayer, then moved through routine business including approval of the meeting agenda and the March 10 minutes before voting to approve a plan that included line-item allocations for public property and public safety.
During the plan presentation the chair read aloud line items; as recorded in the transcript the chair said, "Public property is $65,176 and $70.76 cents. Public safety is $142,102.03." Board members moved and seconded the plan and the chair called for the ayes; the motion carried.
In a departmental report the department chair said hiring is progressing: several new hires remain in the field training officer program and are nearing completion. The chair also described a storehouse HVAC failure and said the contractor — Helm Group — accepted responsibility and provided a temporary fix and the replacement part at no cost under the existing contract.
"They gave us temporary fix... it's not gonna cost us any money," the chair said, noting the courthouse HVAC was functioning the next morning and that the contractor acknowledged the issue was covered under contract.
The meeting also included a coroner/medical examiner summary: the office responded to 57 deaths in March, attended eight scenes, had no autopsies and reported 56 deaths from natural causes with one pending case. Board members asked the coroner to provide year-to-date budget figures in future monthly reports.
Before adjourning, members introduced themselves (including Scott Helms, who identified himself as county board chairman) and discussed a legislative conference on April 14 featuring a data-center training session. The board then moved, seconded and adjourned.
What happens next: staff agreed to provide monthly budget totals going forward and to continue work on the items raised in departmental and coroner reports; no additional votes or policy adoptions were recorded during this session.
