On May 18 the Zionsville Planning Commission moved to pilot a committee structure intended to streamline workload and tackle ordinance amendments and pre‑application land‑use review. Commissioners adopted a shortened set of rules (stopping at section 2.2) to allow committees to form and meet while staff circulates the Town Council’s red‑line and clean versions of the comprehensive plan amendments.
Committee formation and roles: The commission identified two priority committees to pilot: an Ordinance Amendment Committee (to advise staff and prioritize ordinance rewrites such as driveway impervious surfaces and village driveway interpretation) and a Land Use/PUD Committee (to review rezoning and PUD petitions pre‑TAC when possible). Commissioners volunteered primaries and alternates to serve on each committee and agreed committees should avoid constituting a voting majority of the full commission.
Comprehensive plan next steps: Staff announced Town Council had returned amended comprehensive plan documents and requested the commission take action at or before the June meeting. Commissioners asked staff to distribute the red‑line and clean versions promptly so the full commission can review changes ahead of the public hearing next month. Commissioners discussed a potential 60‑day statutory window for action and the option of a special meeting if more time is required.
