North High swimmer Thomas McMillan honored as back-to-back state champion; St. Charles East athletics earns statewide innovation award

The St. Charles CUSD 303 board opened its April 13 meeting with honors for student-athletes and athletic staff.
Joe Benoit, North High27s athletic director, introduced Thomas McMillan, who won the IHSA 100-yard butterfly state championship this February and became a back-to-back state champion. McMillan, who said he attributes his success to "having a good mindset" and daily consistency, told the board he is committed to North Carolina State after graduation.
"This guy's only a junior," Benoit said, celebrating McMillan27s accomplishments. "We're incredibly proud of Thomas and all that he represents at North and for District 303."
The board also recognized St. Charles East27s athletics department, which the AEA Institute named Athletic Department of the Year for the State of Illinois and presented with an Innovation Award. Darren Howard, the district27s athletic director, accepted the recognition and credited coaches and student-athletes for the program27s success.
"This is an award that's really for our department and our coaches," Howard said. "When you're a leader and you guys know this, when you have success, you look out the window. When things don't go well, you look in the mirror. Today I get to look out the window at our coaching staff."
Why it matters: The recognitions highlight student achievement and programming that administrators say reflect district priorities of supporting student athletes as students first. The board noted the presentations as part of the superintendent27s report before moving to committee business.
