Health department showcases student tobacco-prevention posters; program funded by tobacco licensing fees

Megan Kramer, coalition coordinator for Volition Franklin with the Franklin Health Department, presented student winners of the district’s 30th annual tobacco-prevention poster contest and explained the classroom instruction that precedes the contest.
Kramer said health educators work with seventh‑grade students (in Forest Park Middle School) using the Stanford Tobacco Toolkit, an evidence-based, student-friendly curriculum that covers the history of commercial tobacco, marketing tactics targeting youth, and healthy coping strategies. Students translate the instruction into short, visually compelling posters—ten words or fewer—displayed in schools.
The program is funded using city tobacco-store licensing fees. Kramer said each student poster winner receives a $100 gift card for their effort. The board and audience members congratulated the students and took photos.
