The Solon Springs School District board approved policy updates during its May 18 meeting that update personal communication-device rules and prepare the district to meet new state requirements for staff and volunteers.
Board members discussed aligning the district’s professional-support handbook and student handbooks with recent state legislation (referred to in the meeting as changes tied to Act 57 and related communications laws). A board member noted the state Department of Public Instruction will release a templated training plan for districts, and the board acknowledged the district must provide required training for staff and volunteers even if the template arrives after local deadlines.
“One of the challenges in a small district is there’s a lot of blurred lines and how you clearly define what that looks like,” a board member said while discussing volunteer training and the difficulty of implementing requirements in a small community.
The board also reviewed revisions to the district’s personal communication-device policy to ensure practices meet the intent of newly passed legislation; the changes will be reflected in the student handbook, which the board plans to finalize in July. Members agreed that volunteer-training logistics will be more challenging than staff training and pledged to continue developing an implementation plan.
The board passed both packets of policy updates by voice vote. The transcript does not show a roll-call tally. Next steps include incorporating the approved language into handbooks and developing a plan to deliver required volunteer training.
