Board adopts tentative 2026–27 budget with 1% base pay increase

The Henderson County Board of Education voted May 19 to accept a tentative budget for the 2026–27 school year that the superintendent said includes a 1% base salary increase for employees and contingency reserves calculated under Kentucky Department of Education guidance.
Superintendent Dr. Lawson described the tentative budget as the second step in the budget process and emphasized that it is a working plan subject to change once KDE posts final transportation and attendance data and the county completes its property assessment updates. "This budget includes a 1% increase in base salary for employees," Dr. Lawson told the board. He also said the district is in the fourth year of a four-year rotational pay study and has accounted for increased fuel and bus costs and ongoing school safety initiatives.
Dr. Lawson summarized contingency levels included in the tentative working figures: a 13.55% contingency for district operations and a 15.2% contingency calculated via KDE's formula. The board voted to accept the tentative budget by unanimous voice vote; Dr. Lawson said the final working budget will return to the board in September after outstanding data are incorporated.
At the same meeting the treasurer's report was presented. Dr. Lawson reported month-to-date expenditures of $9,052,747 and a net decrease for the month of $3,250,899; the board approved the treasurer's report and later approved the paid warrants for April 2026, which totaled $7,868,677.94.
