Henderson County board approves multiple school construction change orders

The Henderson County Board of Education on May 19 approved a set of construction change orders for multiple district projects, citing code compliance and unforeseen field conditions.
Mr. Thompson, the district's project representative, detailed the East Heights work, saying a door swing in an office corridor had to be reconfigured because "If that door was to open, it would block egress of students." He also described additional casework, sink installations and an electrical feed reroute needed for the media center and adjacent pods. The board approved the East Heights change orders after the superintendent recommended them.
On South Middle School, Mr. Thompson said crews discovered a water-main setback that required a 15-foot clearance and resulting geothermal rework on the football field; the change orders also covered bulkhead and ceiling adjustments and a change from tile to carpet in a counselor's office. The board voted to approve those change orders as presented.
For the culinary renovation (BG25‑430), Mr. Thompson said crews found there had been no isolation shutoff valve for the CTE/culinary hall — a condition that would force a whole-building water shutoff if repairs were needed. The board approved a change order to install a local shutoff valve so that future work can be isolated to the affected space.
Superintendent Dr. Lawson framed the approvals as necessary steps to keep multi-site projects moving toward summer completion. All three sets of change orders passed by unanimous voice vote.
The district's construction update at the same meeting noted that some projects are about a month behind schedule but that teams expect significant summer work — including flooring, casework, door installation and parking-lot paving — to bring sites toward anticipated move-in or occupancy dates.
