Students urge Lehman librarian be retained; others warn proposed bell schedule could limit electives

Two Lehman Intermediate students told the board on May 18 that losing a full‑time librarian would harm instruction and extracurricular opportunities. Kara Hayes, Lehman National Junior Honor Society president, told the board a librarian “does so much more than just check out books,” including teaching research skills, supporting clubs and fostering a love of reading.
Lehman student Liam Lee added the librarian’s role as Model UN adviser is central to his club’s ability to meet, prepare and compete. Superintendent Dr. Vitale responded she would follow up and meet with the students to explain decisions and next steps.
High‑school students also addressed a proposal to change the bell schedule. Student Madeline Malakowski said the proposed schedule would limit elective access and could force students to choose between music/arts and advanced courses; Ian (who signed up online) echoed concerns about the schedule reducing variety and hands‑on learning opportunities. The district’s curriculum lead, Mr. Snyder, is continuing outreach with students and teachers and said any schedule changes would not be implemented sooner than two years if adopted.
