SFDRCISD trustees hear Capturing Kids'Hearts implementation and SHAC wellness recommendations

Middle school leaders and the district's School Health Advisory Committee updated the Board of Trustees on two initiatives the district says are aimed at improving student wellness and school climate.

Presenters described the districtwide first-year implementation of Capturing Kids'Hearts (CKH) at the three middle schools, highlighting the EXCEL framework (engage, explore, communicate, empower, launch), school-wide social contracts, consistent classroom language and a coaching/huddle structure for site leadership. A district presenter said early outcomes include improved school climate, increased student engagement and "decreased referrals in the areas of insubordination and disrespectful conduct." (presenters attributed the reductions to CKH practices.)

Sandra Hernandez presented the School Health Advisory Committee's annual report and a triennial wellness assessment (WellSAT). The SHAC identified four priority recommendations from the assessment: developing a written pre-K health curriculum aligned to state and national standards; adopting a structured recess plan that schedules monitored physical activities; integrating nutrition education into non-health courses; and regulating foods and beverages served at elementary class parties and celebrations. Hernandez said the committee will use an ongoing parent survey and subcommittee work to develop a three-year implementation plan.

Board members praised the CKH emphasis on consistent teacher practices and asked administration to track year-over-year measures. Trustees also discussed how a structured recess plan might be implemented without reducing instructional time and asked for future reports on parent survey results and timelines for SHAC recommendations.
