The River Falls School District on Monday laid out a timeline to fill a forthcoming school board vacancy, saying the board will post the opening, accept applications and interview candidates at a special meeting June 22.
Board and district leaders said the vacancy notice will run in the Star Observer and the Pierce Kearney Journal for two consecutive weeks. Applicants must submit a letter of interest and complete a questionnaire; the district will make the questionnaire available on request by email, phone or in person. The board said it expects to complete interviews and select an appointee within the 60-day window required by district policy.
Why it matters: The appointee will serve only until the next school board election in April 2027, at which point the seat will appear on the ballot for the remainder of the term. The board emphasized that the appointment is made by majority vote of the remaining board members and described a ranked, weighted-ballot procedure that will be used if several candidates are nominated.
Superintendent (moderating the timeline) said the tentative deadline for applications is June 11 and recommended the interviews be held at a special meeting on June 22 during the board retreat so most members can attend. The district will also post vacancy information on its website and on social media, and the superintendent said a downloadable PDF of the posting will be included in the meeting packet.
Process details: District leadership said the policy requires candidates to declare eligibility (age and residency) before the meeting in which the board considers appointees. Interview questions will be established by the board president, the superintendent and board members; the policy allows the board to narrow a field to seven candidates if more apply. At the conclusion of interviews, the board will use weighted ballots and successive rounds of ranked voting until a majority selects a candidate.
Next steps: The board scheduled a special meeting for candidate interviews and a vote on June 22; if fewer than the expected number of applicants apply, the president may direct the superintendent to reissue the solicitation. The appointee would be sworn in and recognized at the concluding meeting after the vote, and could participate in committee work ahead of the July retreat, district leaders said.
