Spokane County proclaims National Public Works Week, commissioners praise department's work

The Spokane County Board of County Commissioners unanimously adopted a proclamation recognizing National Public Works Week, highlighting the county Public Works Department's responsibilities for roads, bridges, water reclamation and solid-waste operations.
A commissioner moved to proclaim National Public Works Week in Spokane County; the text read to the board cited more than $7,000,000 in 2025 roadway and preservation projects, maintenance of more than 5,100 miles of paved and gravel roads, replacement or repair of dozens of culverts, bridge and railroad-bridge inspections, and water-reclamation service that the proclamation said serves about 49,000 customer accounts.
"Public works professionals do not like the spotlight," said Kyle, a Public Works representative who came forward for remarks after the vote. "We like to be behind the scenes just doing the work."
Kyle praised the county's road and wastewater teams and described the department's work as the "bones of our community," saying that residents often notice public works only when it stops functioning: "We make sure all of those things ... the bones of our community ... are there functioning, well maintained and really efficiently preserved."
The board voted on the proclamation by voice and the Chair announced a unanimous vote. The commission then approved other routine agenda items, including items 4 and 5, without discussion.
