Board submits Assistant Superintendent contract for review; approves multiple hires and leaves

The Pennsauken Township Board of Education on April 21 included in an addendum the submission of a contract for James Nesmith to serve as Assistant Superintendent of Personnel (Student Services & Special Populations), effective July 1, 2026, subject to review and approval by the Executive County Superintendent as required by N.J.A.C. rules. The addendum and related personnel items were approved by the board in a separate motion.
The board’s consent actions also ratified a slate of new hires and personnel changes across the district, including a Special Education teacher appointment at Pennsauken High School (Martin Booker, BA Step 16, $94,219) and other staffing actions for food service, social work, transportation and substitute nursing. Several leaves of absence were listed (NJ Family Leave, FMLA and personal leaves) with dates and conditions; return-to-work dates were made contingent on receipt of required medical certifications.
Separations and retirements were acknowledged, including long-tenured staff scheduled to retire at the end of the school year. The board also approved mentor assignments, pre-professional field experiences and staff to work extended-day and Saturday school programs at contractual rates.
Motion to approve the addendum (items 1–9) was carried: Motion by Mr. McDevitt, second by Mr. Carey. The Assistant Superintendent contract will be submitted for the county superintendent’s review before final board approval, per state administrative code.
