Board places 0.5-mill county roads and highways maintenance renewal on Aug. 4 ballot

The Leelanau County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution April 21 to place a roads and highways maintenance and repair millage renewal before voters on the Aug. 4, 2026 primary ballot.
Resolution No. 2026-009, approved as part of the consent agenda, asks voters to renew the existing 0.5000 mill ($0.50 per $1,000 of taxable value) for two years (2026–2027). If levied in full, the county estimates the renewal would raise $2,104,175 in the first calendar year. State law requires the levy proceeds be disbursed to the Leelanau County Road Commission and the villages of Empire, Northport, and Suttons Bay.
The millage renewal continues a financing practice the county has used every two years since 1986 for countywide road maintenance and repair. The resolution was approved by unanimous consent as part of the board’s consent agenda.
Other consent items approved at the same time included a short-term contract extension with Cherryland Humane Society (Oct. 1–Dec. 31, 2026) while longer negotiations continue, approval to submit an MMRMA RAP grant request for IT backup/storage/firewall project costs, and authorization for several RFPs including agenda-management software and wastewater-system study work. Administration also received authorization to allocate a $7,500 credit limit for a county card to Finance Director Rio Risbridger.
