The Board of County Commissioners of Granite County held a first reading on Feb. 17 of Resolution 2026-4, a proposed local-option motor-vehicle tax that would assess 0.5% on light-weight luxury vehicles with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $150,000 or more if approved by county voters on the June 2 primary ballot.
County Treasurer Ashley Todd told the board the county currently has roughly $1.3 billion in qualifying vehicle value at or above $100,000, much of it registered through out-of-state limited liability companies. Todd said revenue would be distributed under state statute, with portions to Granite County and to the towns of Philipsburg and Drummond for general-purpose use including infrastructure or grant matching.
The measure excludes motorhomes because they follow a different depreciation schedule, and commissioners said the $150,000 threshold is intended to limit impact on local residents. Public commenters asked for clearer ballot language defining “lightweight vehicle” and for assurances that the town-sharing arrangement be explicitly stated on the ballot.
Commissioner Kulaski said the draft needs clarification before voters see it; the board agreed to revise the language and return the resolution for a second reading at next week’s meeting. No vote was taken on adopting the measure at first reading.
The board posted an updated draft of the resolution to the county website after additional edits and set a second reading for next week.
