Council liaison urges creation of full-time sustainability coordinator as staff roles shift

Jamie Hassmeyer, the commission's new council liaison, said she has "for the last couple of budget seasons, introduced the idea of having a full time sustainability coordinator on staff here," and said she will continue pushing the conversation in council as budget season begins.
Deputy city manager David Bookless told commissioners that John Hickey's term ended and he resigned rather than serving another term, and that staffer Sean accepted a full-time sustainability role with the city of St. Louis. Bookless said the city has not yet advertised to fill the local position and asked commissioners to help sustain events Sean had spearheaded, such as the Pumpkin Smash and EcoEd coordination.
Commissioners discussed which events fall under each subcommittee and confirmed the Webster Groves Public Library will host a display and has purchased books to support the August 17 EcoEd event. Hassmeyer said the commission's upcoming comprehensive-plan work and layered sustainability measures make a dedicated staff position worth pursuing.
The conversation did not produce a council or budget decision; Hassmeyer framed the proposal as an item she intends to keep on the council's radar during the budget process.
