Shelbyville Central Schools board approves Golden Bear preschool program, contracts, bond claims and summer service updates

The board unanimously approved the Golden Bear preschool after‑school program, which administrators said would be cost neutral provided sufficient enrollment. The board also approved an overnight boys basketball field trip to Indiana Wesleyan University in June and an agreement to provide district buses and drivers for Boys and Girls Club summer activities at no cost to the district.
Administrators asked the board to approve several contracts and renewals, including a transition from two‑year to three‑year import renewal contracts that they said reduced cost by $5,166.80. The board approved a natural gas purchasing consortium arrangement intended to secure bulk pricing with roughly 50 other districts and authorized several contracts for marketing, strategic planning and facility services.
On capital items, the board approved 2024 bond claims totaling $1,129,824.58 and 2026 refunding bond claims totaling $32,934.89; the superintendent noted bonds fund capital projects, not salaries, and said bond work helps relieve pressure on operations funds. The board also approved supplemental payment agreements to remunerate teachers for work done outside contract time and accepted a list of community donations earmarked for extracurricular programs.
Administrators provided a summer food service update: four closed sites (Boys and Girls Club, Girls Inc, Parks Department and Golden Bear Daycare) will serve breakfast and lunch on scheduled days and the high school will operate an open site Monday–Friday with registered families eligible for weekend meal pickups. Several items (noncertified handbook revisions) were presented as a first reading and are scheduled to return for approval with an effective date of July 1.
Most motions were carried by voice vote with "aye" recorded; where specific dollar amounts were discussed they were stated in administrators' reports and packet materials.
