Fridley board approves calendar fix, moves final day for most students to June 8

The Fridley Public Schools board voted unanimously on May 19 to adjust the 2025–26 school calendar after administrators identified a clerical error related to state professional-development requirements.
Dr. Amy Cochran, senior officer for academics and innovation, told the board the district discovered the error while drafting the 2027–28 calendar and worked with the Fridley Education Association and building principals to find options. "We have a proposal that we would move the final day of school forward by 2 days," Cochran said, adding that the change would bring teachers’ contractual work days into alignment. "Our teacher contract calls for 185 working days. Currently right now as it sits, they are working 187 days." She said the recommended schedule sets seniors’ last day and graduation on Friday, June 5, and moves the final day for preK through 11 to Monday, June 8; Tuesday, June 9 would be a staff development day and June 10 an evaluation and planning day.
The change was presented as an administrative correction needed to comply with the Reid Act requirement for professional learning days. Superintendent Dr. Brenda Lewis told the board the adjustment was the best of imperfect options and emphasized a goal of minimizing family disruption while meeting state minimum requirements.
Board members asked how the change would affect field trips, building events and staffing; Cochran said principals and the FEA worked to shift activities where possible and that a staff and parent letter was ready to send immediately upon approval. Chair called for a motion and, after a second, the board conducted a roll-call vote in which each named member recorded an "aye." The motion passed.
The board update said communications to families would be translated and released promptly and that the district will include the change on its public web pages and in the finance-update materials.
What’s next: The district will send the staff and parent letter upon finalization and will adjust building-level calendars with principals to reduce disruption to planned end-of-year events.
