At the May 19 session of the Norwalk Fire Commission, the assistant fire chief of operations said the department will present a request to the public safety subcommittee and then the common council to approve capital funds for a new ladder truck.
The assistant chief noted the procurement has a long lead time. "I think the actual contract said, like, 46 to 52 months," he said, adding that the department is likely four to four-and-a-half years from delivery after contract approval. He said the ladder truck would replace a 2010 apparatus and, if approved by council, would be funded from capital funds available in the current fiscal year.
The operations chief also said a new rescue truck is nearing the pre-build inspection in Wisconsin and is expected to arrive late 2026 or in early 2027, and that the department recently hired Leo DeSilva as an assistant mechanic. The department reported it ordered and received additional thermal imaging cameras so each firefighter will carry a camera for rapid scene assessment.
The assistant chief said the items will move through the committee and council process for final approval; no purchase was finalized at the commission meeting.
