Norwalk Fire Department tracking about $164,000 under budget and reports near-full staffing

At the May 19 meeting of the Norwalk Fire Commission, Fire Chief McCabe told commissioners the department is tracking about $164,000 under its $23.4 million fiscal-year budget through the end of April and remains in a “solid position.”
Chief McCabe said the department has spent about $10,800,000 of $13,300,000 budgeted for salaries (about 81.5%), $3,700,000 of $4,590,000 for overtime (just under 81%), and $19,300,000 of $23,400,000 overall (82.6% spent), leaving roughly $4.1 million available for the remainder of the year. “At this point, we're in good shape and where we want to be,” McCabe said.
The commission asked about staffing. A committee member reported the department is at roughly “96, 94% of staffing.” Chief McCabe clarified the department is operating with four vacancies, which he said is near the low end of the typical vacancy range of four to eight positions.
The chief cautioned that margins are fairly tight as the fiscal year concludes and said staff will continue close monitoring of expenditures. No formal budget adjustments or votes were taken at the meeting; commissioners were informed that any capital or major changes would be brought forward to the common council or appropriate subcommittees for approval.
The commission is expected to continue budget oversight as the year closes.
