City planning staff briefed the commission on May 19 about the city’s process to combine the existing zoning and subdivision ordinances into a single unified development ordinance (UDO).
Staff said the drafting process is about halfway done and that consultants have received roughly 250 community surveys to inform the rewrite. The stated intent is to carry forward much of the existing code where appropriate while simplifying and cleaning up language across chapters. Staff said they hope to complete drafting by the end of July and will present the first draft to the council, commission members, and the public before holding a workshop and returning to the commission later this year for formal review.
A commissioner asked whether the draft considers smaller homes and accessory dwelling units (ADUs). Planning staff replied that the draft includes consideration of smaller homes, planned unit developments (PUDs), and ADUs and that the changes could allow development of these housing types in some cases without requiring individual variances.
No decisions were made on the draft language at the meeting; staff summarized the outreach so far and outlined the next steps: finish drafting, host a public workshop, and present the draft to the commission and city council for formal review and comment.
