Commissioners direct county manager to solicit master plan RFP after concerns about pickleball, tennis courts and aging facilities

The Macon County Board of Commissioners on March 14 instructed the county manager to solicit requests for proposals for a comprehensive master site study of the county recreation park after recreation commission members described deteriorating facilities and competing priorities.
Tim Crabtree, representing the recreation commission, said members want to “take a step back” from a previously approved pickleball court project and pursue a holistic plan for the entire recreation park. Crabtree noted the tennis courts are cracking and need resurfacing or replacement, and that tennis players need dedicated restroom and changing facilities. Jeff Weller described outdated buildings — about 60 years old — that are frequently repaired but may be better repurposed.
Commissioner Young moved to direct the county manager to solicit proposals for a master comprehensive site study for the recreation park; the motion passed unanimously. The study will inform decisions about resurfacing, restroom placement, building repurposing, and how to sequence investments alongside projects such as the Whitmire Property skate park.
The action asks county staff to return recommendations and contractor proposals to the board for consideration as part of future budgeting and park planning.
